Notions (2)

A wee bit of a re-write. The last lines were a bit unwieldly. I’d like better rhymes/half rhymes for the ends of lines 1 and 3 of stanzas 3 and 4.*

I did manage to keep the “squat pen” reference though. I’m pleased with that.

*Oh! For the last stanza all I had to do was invert line 3. I’m looking at stanza 3 now. I should be working.

I think this might be it. For now.

Notions

Don’t you be getting any notions, son.

I won’t let you forget where you are from.

This sort of thing is above our station.

No rest for squat pens between your finger and thumb.

I don’t think I’ve gotten full of notions.

I think these may be good enough to show.

Who says writing is above my station?

I think that sort of gatekeeping has got to go.

But this sort of thing isn’t for us, son.

Get a job, a family, settle first.

Think about writing when your real works done..

Money in the banks more important than your verse..

There’s no satisfaction in an office.

Life’s answers won’t be found in a spreadsheet.

Who is it for if it isn’t for us?

Poetry’s not just for the self-declared elite..
